Traveling with Purpose: How I Found Happiness By Volunteering

Karen – Nigeria

Volunteering abroad was one of the most impactful experiences of my life. It started a few years ago when I felt lost and unfulfilled with my daily routine. I had a stable job at a leading financial institution, but I couldn’t shake off this feeling of emptiness. I knew I needed to change my something in my life, so I decided to take a shot in the dark and volunteer abroad.

After researching different organisations and programs, I found a volunteer opportunity in a rural village in Cabo Verde. I only knew a little about the country and the culture, but still, I was eager to learn and make a difference. I quit my job, packed my bags, and embarked on a journey that would change my life forever.

When I arrived in Cabo Verde, I was struck by the vibrant colours, the bustling streets, and the people’s warm hospitality. I was greeted by the local coordinator, who would be my guide and mentor throughout my volunteer experience. She introduced me to other volunteers worldwide, and we bonded over our shared passion for making a positive impact.

I was assigned to a village school where I would teach English and Math to students aged 10 to 14. The school was bare, without running water, electricity, or desks. The students sat on the floor and used small chalkboards to write on. My student’s enthusiasm and drive to learn despite these circumstances inspired me.

Teaching was challenging at first, as I had no prior teaching experience, but it quickly became a rewarding experience. The students were curious, playful, and respectful. They welcomed me with open arms and treated me like family. I learned as much from them as they learned from me. I learned about their daily struggles, dreams, and hopes for a better future. Despite our different backgrounds, I realised we all had the same desires for love, fulfilment and happiness.

In addition to teaching, I was also involved in community outreach programs, such as building clean water wells and organising health campaigns. These activities gave me a deeper understanding of the challenges the local community faces and how small actions can impact people’s lives. I felt like I was making a difference, even if it was a small one.

One of the highlights of my volunteer experience was cultural immersion. I had the opportunity to live with a host family who welcomed me into their home and showed me their way of life. I ate local dishes, learned the local language, and participated in traditional ceremonies. I also travelled to different parts of the country and saw diverse landscapes and cultures. These experiences opened my mind and expanded my worldview. I realised there is so much more to life than before.

Volunteering abroad was challenging. There were moments of despair, frustration, homesickness, and uncertainty. However, those challenges made me stronger, more resilient, and more appreciative of the little things in life. I learned to embrace discomfort, find joy in simplicity, and people, and be grateful for every opportunity that comes my way.

After my volunteer experience ended, I returned home with a renewed sense of purpose and a new perspective on life. I realised that happiness doesn’t come from material possessions or external validation but from meaningful connections, personal growth, and contribution to society. I also realised that happiness is a daily choice, regardless of circumstances.

Volunteering abroad brought me happiness by giving me a sense of purpose, a connection to others, and a deeper understanding of myself and the world around me. It reminded me that we are all connected and that we have the power to make a positive
