How to Improve Your Mental Wellness as You Age.

By Teddy Leon

As we age, one of our most valuable assets become our mental well-being. It shapes our perception of the world, influences our relationships, determines our overall quality of life, and decides what’s “worth it” and what doesn’t, i.e what drama we get involved in, and what we avoid. Overall, we tend to prioritize our happiness and peace of mind over things that conflict with that position, possibly because as we age, we benefit from the experience of “been there, done that” and definitely not worth our time or energy.

Aging then is a useful tool for aligning our physical world with our mental frameworks(hopefully healthy ones), however aging does come with various physical, emotional, and cognitive changes, and overall mental wellness  plays a crucial role in how we navigate these changes and embrace the later stages of life with grace and vitality. I therefore would like to propose some key strategies to consider when it comes to caring for our mental well-being as we age.

Let us focus on cultivating a positive mindset, despite the challenges we will no doubt encounter in life, may it be physical, financial or relationships. Our mindset has a profound impact on our mental wellness. Embracing a positive attitude and cultivating optimism despite what we are currently experiencing can help us navigate challenges, setbacks, and transitions more effectively. Recognize and challenge negative self-talk, practice gratitude, and focus on the present moment. Embracing a positive mindset will promote resilience and enhance our overall well-being.

Another strategy is staying physically active regardless of whatever we have going on in our lives. Carve out at least an hour everyday to take the time to engage in a physical activity. Could be walking, riding, jumping jacks, swimming, yoga, or anything that keeps you moving and is appropriate for you abilities. Engaging in regular physical activity not only benefits our physical health but also has a positive impact on our mental well-being. Exercise releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones that can boost our mood and reduce stress and anxiety, hence staying active can contribute significantly to mental wellness as we age.

Nurturing social connections is also another way to boost our wellbeing. As we age, it is common for our social networks to change; children leave home, friends move away, friends “transition” making it even more important to actively nurture relationships to replace the ones we lose along the way.  We can seek out opportunities to engage with others, join community groups, participate in hobbies or volunteer activities (I am currently recruiting for the Kiwanis Club of Bridgetown a charity that specializes in working with children). Meaningful social connections provide a sense of belonging, support, and companionship, which are essential for mental wellness. : Maintaining strong social connections is vital for our mental well-being.

We should also seek to stimulate our mind, by engaging in mentally stimulating activities that help keep our minds sharp and agile as we age. If you don’t use it, you tend to lose it! So whether it’s reading, solving puzzles, learning a new skill, or pursuing creative hobbies, stimulating our minds promotes cognitive function and can reduce the risk of cognitive decline. Embrace lifelong learning and keep your brain active to support mental wellness throughout the aging process.

Finally, prioritize self-care despite what else is happening in your life. Self-care is crucial for mental wellness at any age, and it becomes even more important as we age. Prioritize activities that promote relaxation, reduce stress, and enhance overall well-being. This may include practices such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing exercises, journaling, or engaging in activities that bring you joy and peace. Taking care of your own needs allows you to better navigate the challenges and changes that come with aging.

Note though, that It’s important to recognize when additional support is needed. If you’re experiencing persistent feelings of sadness, anxiety, or struggling with significant life changes, don’t hesitate to seek help from a mental health professional. They can provide guidance, support, and resources tailored to your specific needs, ensuring you receive the care necessary for your mental well-being. By cultivating a positive mindset, staying physically active, nurturing social connections, stimulating our minds, prioritizing self-care, and seeking support when needed, we can enhance our mental well-being and embrace the aging process with resilience and fulfillment. Remember, mental wellness is a lifelong journey, and by prioritizing it, we can live a more vibrant and fulfilling life as we grow older.
