Cooking as a Therapeutic Escape: How I Learned to Love Spending Time in the Kitchen

Sofia – Spain

Cooking was never something I enjoyed doing. As a kid, it was always stressful to watch my family arguing about who helped my parents in the kitchen and especially who cleaned the dishes after dinner. It was never something enjoyable and thus, the food never tasted like it was something special.

Now, I cook for myself and it is something that I look forward to, during the entire day. When I’m working in the morning or doing my chores, I think about what I’m going to cook for myself in the evening. It has become an activity where I release all my tensions and stress. Every evening I cook something different.

I have thousand ideas of what I could create out of bare food materials. If I know what I’m cooking, the first thing I do is put on some music to get the good vibes going! Then, I enter a flow where I create amazing dishes which are delicious. Sometimes it takes me 30 minutes and sometimes 2 hours to finish a meal. But it doesn’t really matter how long it takes, I usually loose track of time anyways.

Cooking, is now my happy place. why, I don’t know, especially because of my early experfiences.
